Section V Hockey Streak in State Championships Ends
April 27, 2010

Section V Hockey was represented by Pittsford for Division I  and Webster Thomas for  Division II this year.  Webster Thomas lost to this year's Division II champs, New Hartford, in a hard fought game that went into 3 overtime periods!  New Hartford went on to beat Plattsburgh and then Queensbury to become the 2010 Division II state champs.  Pittsford advanced to the second round and lost 4-3 to Saratoga.  Saratoga then lost to West Genesee who became the 2010 Division I state champs.

In 2005 McQuaid Jesuit won the Division I championship.  In 2006 Aquinas lost to Williamsville North in the championship game.  In 2007 Canandaigua lost in the Division II championship game to Monroe-Woodbury.  In 2008 Webster Thomas brought back the Division II State championship to Section V.  In 2009 Athena/Odyssey brought back the Division 1 State championship to Section V, also having an undefeated record throughout.  As you can see Section V has represented the state championships in either Division I or II in the last 5 years.

Even though this year did not result in representation of Section V Hockey in the state championships it was not disappointing because it was the first time in five years  that Section V Hockey has not been represented in the state championships.  This year was not our year to make it to a championship game or bring back a championship, but a lot of our teams are younger and that means great things for year's to come!  Here's looking forward to next
year's season!

Dan Barrows - My Hockey Hero
April 27, 2010

On Thursday, November 8, 2007, my life changed forever and so did the Section 5 Monroe County High School Hockey League.  Gone forever is our Dan from our lives, but certainly not from our hearts.  What a huge void his passing has left for us all.  The support I've received from the New York State, Section 5, and RIT hockey communities has been overwhelming and I am forever grateful to you all.

Dan, an Aquinas graduate, didn't just love the game of hockey; he breathed it, ate it, and slept it.  Hockey was his true life's passion.  Dan was not only a student of the game, but a master of the fine points of it as well.  It was so amusing to observe Dan on many occasions when he would corner someone and start talking hockey to them.  Sometimes they really needed to get someplace and tried to politely pry themselves away and Dan was oblivious to it all!

On March 10, 1996 Monroe County Section 5 High School Hockey finally won the Class A New York State finals.  The very first-ever!  Dan was absolutely overjoyed, as his dream had been realized.  The Greece Lightning 1995-96 Division I Team beat Section 3 Oswego, 4-3.  Pete Cardamone, the Section 5 Chairman at the time, let Dan present the championship trophy to Greece's Head Coach Mike Dossier.  I was happy to be there in the stands to see hockey history in the making with Mike's wife, Kathy.

Please know that he truly loved all aspects of Section 5 Hockey from the coaches to the fans, but especially the players.  When some of them went on to further hockey success, Dan was their biggest cheerleader.  Although his view is different from ours now, he's still cheering for his beloved game and players.

Dan, you will always be my hockey hero - I love you and I miss you so much.  May God Bless and keep you in His eternal care.
